Artist Statement

For the past 10 years W. Roland Hamilton has been successfully merging his interest in urban exploration and photography. Abandoned industrial places and historically significant architecture has been the main focus of his gallery exhibitions. Hamilton’s introduction to this genre of photography began in 1999 while helping a colleague with a presentation at Ryerson University. The subject of the project was abandoned buildings, urban exploration, and preservation or restoration of historical sites. When the effort was completed, W. Roland Hamilton continued his photography work in Toronto and Detroit. In 2006, after 8 years of archiving industrial and residential exploration images, he published the website www.silentbuildings.com.

“Exteriors and Interiors of Abandoned Industrial Architecture” exhibit features Hamilton’s newest works. In the words of the artist, “Urban exploration is the act of investigating urban environments while going beyond one’s usual realm of regular experience”. W. Roland Hamilton’s photos convey the quiet elegance of sites abandoned and forgotten.
